Sean’s story

Futures Alpharetta   -

I grew up attending a Catholic church, and in my experience, it was more about religion than about the relationship you can have with God. Because of that, I put all of my faith in worldly things. As life went on, everything started to fall apart. I had education and sport opportunities, but they didn’t work out for me. I even missed the moment to go see my granddad before he passed away, and I didn’t get to say goodbye.

It felt like everything was being taken away from me, and I was mad at God for it all. Eventually, I just stopped believing in Him.

When I went to college I met my wife, Jess. It was the first time I had seen someone in a true relationship with God, and I started to become curious about her faith. Through her, I began to open up my heart to God again.

When we got married, we moved near Alpharetta and we were looking for a home church. Unlike my wife, I’m the kind of guy that wants to show up to church, hide in the crowd, and then get out of there as soon as service is over. I didn’t want anyone to know my story or to connect with me. When we decided to visit Futures Church, I just couldn’t hide anywhere. I begged Jess to leave early, but we stayed and even hung out at the Connections point after service, which was something totally new for me.

From that Sunday on, we just kept coming back. Jess got more connected than I did at first, but through her involvement, we met Adriana. Adriana really pushed me out of my comfort zone to start serving, and I eventually joined a couple of Dream Teams, got involved in a RISE group and even finished Futures Leadership School. I found that each step I took forward, the less pushing it took to get me to serve, and  the more of a heart I had for it. Now I lead the Parking Team, and I’m one of the first faces people see on a Sunday morning. I am a totally different person.

A couple of series ago, Ps Ashley was teaching about fasting. Jess and I needed a word from God, so we decided to give it a try. I did my first water fast for one week, and after day 3, it was like I could see the clearest I ever have. Everything made sense in my life, and Jess and I had total confidence about our future. It was amazing.

Through this whole experience, it has been incredible to grow and go deeper with God. And now I know it’s time for me to go public with my faith and get water baptized, so that is what I am doing today.

Sean was water baptized at Futures Alpharetta on Sunday September 24, 2023.
